Calcitonin
Brand Name: Miacalcin, Calcimar, Fortical
Description:
Calcitonin is a naturally occurring hormone involved in calcium regulation and bone metabolism.
It has been shown to slow bone loss, increase spinal bone density and lower the risk of spine fractures.
It is a small protein, and so it cannot be taken by mouth.
Single daily intranasal spray that provides 200 IU of drug.
Subcutaneous administration by injections also available.
Calcitonin approved for treatment of osteoporosis in women who are at least 5 years postmenopausal.
Guidelines for taking this medication:
One squirt each day, alternating nostrils.
If you miss a dose, give the missed dose as soon as possible.
If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule.
Do not use a double dose or take an extra dose.
Store the unopened bottle in the refrigerator until ready to use.
Do not freeze.
Store the opened bottle in an upright position at room temperature.
Throw away any unused portion after 30 days.
Possible side effects: Nasal irritation.
Reasons not to take this medicine:
Allergy to calcitonin or any other part of this medicine.
Allergy to salmon.
If you are pregnant or may become pregnant.
If you are breast feeding.
