Haywood Regional Medical Center’s Department of Pathology comprises a full spectrum of anatomic and clinical pathology (laboratory), utilizing the most advanced medical equipment to provide testing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is under the medical directorship of a board certified pathologist, providing local and regional coverage and all aspects of laboratory medicine including cytopathology, surgical pathology, in-patient and outpatient laboratory services, as well as an outreach program, extending to counties west of Haywood.

Computer networking within the hospital’s Meditech System allows physicians’ offices to order laboratory tests quickly and accurately. The same system allows the lab to forward results to the nursing floors and the physicians without delay.

HRMC’s laboratory is accredited by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). The CAP laboratory accreditation is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. HRMC laboratory is the only laboratory west of Asheville accredited by both the College of American Pathologists and the American Association of Blood Banks. Two board-certified pathologists are on staff.
