The Behavioral Health Unit is an adult psychiatric inpatient program at Haywood Regional Medical Center managed by Smoky Mountain Center under contract. Using state funds, the west wing of the sixth floor was renovated to provide a safe, secure and attractive unit. Care is provided by psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinical social workers and community mental health assistants.

The Behavioral Health Unit has 16 beds, with the average length of stay being seven days. Smoky Mountain Center's emergency services will screen referrals to the unit.
