Brand Name: Miacalcin

Description: 

  • Miacalcin (‘calcitonin’) is a naturally occurring hormone involved in calcium regulation and bone metabolism. 
  • It has been shown to slow bone loss, increase spinal bone density and lower the risk of spine fractures. 
  • It is a small protein, and so it cannot be taken by mouth.

 

Guidelines for taking this medication: 

  • One squirt each day, alternating nostrils.
  • If you miss a dose, give the missed dose as soon as possible.
  • If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. 
  • Do not use a double dose or take an extra dose. 
  • Store the unopened bottle in the refrigerator until ready to use. 
  • Do not freeze. 
  • Store the opened bottle in an upright position at room temperature. 
  • Throw away any unused portion after 30 days.

 

Possible side effects:  Nasal irritation.

 

Reasons not to take this medicine:

  • Allergy to calcitonin or any other part of this medicine.
  • Allergy to salmon.
  • If you are pregnant or may become pregnant.
  • If you are breast feeding.
