King to address joint center concept
Dr. Gerald King, an orthopedic physician and director of the Carolina Center for Joint Replacement, will be the speaker for a Lunch and Learn session Aug. 18 at the Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center.
“From Pain to Performance” is the topic for the session, to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the second floor classroom. King will discuss the benefits of joint replacement, a minimally invasive method for hip replacement, and will explain the joint center concept. Joining King will be physical therapist Doug Scarborough, who will discuss what is involved before and after joint replacement. John Rogers, who recently had a total knee replacement, will share his experience with attendees.
Carolina Center for Joint Replacement is a three-phase program designed to maximize patient outcomes after total joint replacement. Patients become part of a team of surgeons and their staff, pre-op and operating room staff, anesthesiologists, specially trained nurses, physical therapists, case managers and pharmacists.
King received a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1974 from Andrews University and his doctor of medicine degree in 1977 from Loma Linda University, School of Medicine. He received his post graduate training through a residency and orthopedic residency at Loma Linda University, School of Medicine. He was in general orthopedic practice in Ukiah, Calif., from 1982 to 1993, followed by a brief practice in Bakersville, Calif., and a solo private practice in Calhoun, Ga., from 1993 until relocating to Haywood County in December.
Scarborough, an employee in rehabilitation services since 2006, recently earned a doctor of physical therapy degree. He is one of only a few physical therapists in Western North Carolina to earn the degree. Scarborough earned the degree through the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, Fla., where he also earned a master’s degree in 1999, and achieved certification in manual therapy in 2002. He also hold’s a bachelor of business administration which he earned from the University of Miami in 1992.
