HRMC fitness center has new line-up of youth activities
The staff of Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center is offering a new focus on family fun members and guests. In June, the fitness center will launch its “FIT KIDZ” line-up, with 10 new program offerings designed specifically for giving young people multiple outlets for having fun, while staying active.
“We have heard the suggestions from our members and community, and we are responding in turn,” said fitness center director Scotty Setser. “With our new FIT KIDZ line-up, we are focusing on giving our younger members and guests the same structured, goal-oriented programs that our adult members have been enjoying for quite some time.”
Signups are now available for the following youth programs:
American Red Cross Youth Swimming Lessons on Saturdays:
Infant through Youth, Advanced;
Ages 6 months to 13 years;
Begins June 14;
9:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (dependent upon class) on Saturdays; Cost is $30 for members/$50 public.
American Red Cross Youth Swimming Lessons on Fridays:
Infant through Youth, Advanced;
Ages 3 to 13 years;
Begins June 20;
4 to 6:30 p.m. (dependent upon class) on Fridays; Cost is $30 for members/$50 public.
Tortuga Tumblers:
A fun-filled, beneficial class incorporating skills such as balance beam, cartwheels, rolls, curl-ups, various dance moves, and more. Great mix of high energy within a safe, friendly environment; Ages 3 to 6 years; Begins June 21; 10 to 10:30 am on Saturdays; Cost is $10 for members/$15 public (for four-session punch card).
Hip-Hop Dance:
A high-energy class designed to mesh physical fitness with today’s most popular urban dance moves; Ages 7 and older; Begins June 25; 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Free to members/$20 for public per month.
Kidz Swim Club:
Improves upon the levels of physical conditioning of participants, by using swimming, and swimming performance enhancement, as the modality for doing so. All participants must be proficient swimmers to participate, equal in ability to youth-intermediate (Buccaneers) status.
Ages 8 to 13;
Begins June 23;
4:30 to 5:15 p.m. on Mondays;
Free to members/$20 for public per month.
Tae Kwon Do:
Give your child the chance of gaining self-defense maneuvers, improving overall fitness and flexibility, and developing self-confidence, all in one great curriculum. Instructed by fourth-degree black belt Marshall Hale.
Ages 8 to 13;
Begins Monday, July 7 (free demo Monday, June 23); 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays.
Youth Athletics Agility Clinic:
Conducted by certified fitness trainers, in association with Haywood Sports Medicine, this six-week progressive course is designed as a catalyst for improving overall fitness levels of young athletes. The last 15 to 30 minutes of each session is devoted to games and active play, following a pre-planned workout of the day. Participants compete for a prize to be given to the clinic’s top performer at the end of six weeks.
Ages 8 to 13;
Runs June 24 through Aug. 8;
5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays;
Free to members/$50 for public.
Lisa’s Power Hour:
Join aerobics instructor/personal fitness trainer Lisa Cook for an hour-long melting pot of various fitness-based activities. Itinerary may include everything from kids’ yoga and pilates to wall-climbing, to group exercise routines such as stepping and kickboxing.
Ages 7 to 13;
Begins Wednesday, June 25;
5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Wednesdays;
Free to members/$15 for public.
Camp Dynamo:
Youth day camp designed to pack as much active fun and adventure into one week as possible. Activities include whitewater rafting, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, indoor climbing, and more. Conducted by fitness center managers.
Ages 8 to 14;
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm (supervised drop-off/pick-up one hour before and after); Session One: Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27; Session Two: Monday, July 21 through Friday, June 25; Cost is $120 for members/$140 for public.
Junior Lifeguarding Camp:
For kids not yet old enough to become certified lifeguards, yet have an interest in entering into training for various emergencies. Curriculum will include swim instruction, lifesaving skills, introduction to CPR, and various beach, boating, and swift-water rescue techniques, with a healthy dose of fun thrown into the mix. Recognized by American Red Cross with certificate of achievement.
Ages 10 to 14;
$70 for members/$85 for public.
