White named chairman of HRMC governing board

The Haywood Regional Medical Center Board of Commissioners elected Glenn White as president Thursday night, replacing Dr. Nancy Freeman, who resigned from her position on the board March 7.

White is serving his third term on the board, a position he has held since 2000. His term expires April 21, 2009. During his tenure, he has served as treasurer of the board.

"The Board’s focus has always been on patient care and enhancing that care.  We’ve bought a tremendous amount of new equipment," White said. "We also were able to build a new emergency department through investments and community donations through the HRMC Foundation. We have been repairing and growing the hospital while still able to grow our investment funds."

The HRMC governing board, which normally meets on the fourth Thursday of each month, has been meeting weekly since the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services terminated its funding contract with the hospital on Feb. 24.

"We will continue to meet weekly," White said. "There is a lot happening and it is critical that we have weekly updates."  The board has much to do in the weeks and months ahead, he said.

"Our bylaws need to be updated, and our committees will have to work together to address personnel issues," White said. "We will certainly deal with the current issues related to reinstating the hospital's Medicare and Medicaid funding in an expeditious manner, and will disseminate as much information as we can to the medical staff and employees of the hospital."

White is a native of West Virginia.  He and his wife of 44 years, Jean, chose to spend their retirement years in Haywood County after attending a wedding of a friend here.  He wasted no time investing his time and talent in the community, choosing the hospital as his first interest.

"I chose to be involved because I wanted Haywood Regional to be a special place, a place that patients from throughout the area can come for quality care.

White is a graduate of West Virginia University where he earned  bachelor and master's degrees in civil engineering.  He spent his career in the area of construction materials and worked in a variety of management positions for the Martin Marietta and Lafarge corporations.
