Fitness center employees to attend diabetes fellowship
Registered nurses Betty Crowley and Kathy Keogh of Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center have been selected to attend the East Carolina University School of Medicine Intensive Clinical Fellowship for Diabetes Education.
The fellowship is provided to enhance the skills of health professionals to provide diabetes care. The fellowship was developed in response to the professional training needs to local health departments. The Diabetes Prevention and Control program supports the fellowship by contracting for registered nurses, registered dietitians and other health professionals to attend.
The ECU Clinical Fellowship in Diabetes provides the only program of its kind, including extensive clinical involvement with a program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. The program staff includes six certified diabetes educators and a cooperative effort of the department of medicine, pediatrics and family medicine of Pitt County Memorial Hospital University Health Systems.
The Diabetes Control program will use East Carolina University’s Diabetes Training Center to train state and local health personnel in diabetes issues. This includes sending staff from local health departments and non-profit community agencies to the training. The training is a five-day intensive hands-on clinical training.
Recipients of the scholarship are required to provide the Diabetes Prevention and Control program with a follow-up evaluation of their activities within six months after returning from the ECU Clinical Fellowship training.
