Fitness Center to host Safety Day for area youth
 
The Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center will host “Children’s Safety Day” On Saturday, Jan. 12, The event is a collaborative effort between numerous service providers from the area, and is directed toward providing pertinent personal safety information to parents and/or guardians of kids of all ages within the surrounding community.

The event is open to the public free of charge, and is available on a drop-in basis within the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Some events planned for the day include, but are not limited to:

• A visit from Sparky the Fire Dog, along with representatives of the Canton Fire Department, presenting tips on fire prevention and safety.

• The “Smokehouse” burning building exhibit will be available, courtesy of Center Pigeon Fire Department.

• Haywood Sports Med. Department will be on hand to address athletic injury prevention and management.

• Representatives from the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department will present tips on various issues centralizing around public, neighborhood, and home safety and crime prevention.

• Water safety tips and guidelines will be offered in HRH&FC’s pool area, courtesy of HRH&FC Aquatics staff. Parents are invited to dress children in swimming attire, for a free sample swim lesson with a certified water safety instructor.

• Representatives of HRH&FC’s Health Education Department will be on hand to discuss issues such as infant and toddler safety tips, toy safety, childhood obesity prevention and better nutrition practices, among others.

Childcare will be available during this event, for parents wishing to spend additional time at exhibits. Door prizes will include a free one-month membership to Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center, and a free pass to the fitness center’s group swim lessons beginning Jan. 19, 2008.
