Pirates Loose in Fitness Center

The Aquatics Department of Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center has officially rolled out an all-new, fun and exciting group swim lesson program for 2008.

“We’ve taken our existing program, and mixed in a touch of ‘piratical’ attitude,” says program coordinator Shawn Smathers. “Our objective is to maintain our strict adherence to the teachings of the American Red Cross, but to make the surrounding activities much more fun and meaningful to our youngest customers.”

Although centrally focused on the mechanics of swimming, the program will incorporate a more extensive lineup of tips, hints and demonstrations on how to stay safe in and around the water. On its lighter side, the program will feature a fun array of new games and activities, all revolving around its pirate theme, such as “Sunken Treasure,” “Buried Bounty,” and “Cannonball Relays.”

All classes will take place on Saturdays, Jan. 19 through March 8, 2008, according to the following lineup: Swabbies (infant), 9:30 to 10 a.m.; Mateys (toddler), 10:15 to 10:45 a.m.; Picaroons I (preschool I), 11 to 11:30 a.m.; Picaroons II (preschool II); 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Swashbucklers (youth-Beginner), 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.; Buccaneers (youth-intermediate),1:30 to 2:15 p.m.; Captains (youth-advanced), 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Sign-ups will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis at the front desk of Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center. For more information on the program, or which class is best-suited for a particular child, call 452-8056.

If planning to attend group swim lessons, children may attend Children’s Safety Day from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, for a free in-pool orientation with Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center’s water safety instructors.
