Women's Care Center has new Director

A former nurse with more than 20 years of experience has been named director of the Women’s Care Center at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Jackie Edwards replaces Janet Whisnant as director. Whisnant retired in June. Edwards’ first day at the Women’s Care Center was Oct. 15.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first couple of weeks,” Edwards said. “I’m looking forward to helping expand and develop the center. That is my forte´.”

Edwards, a native of Illinois, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Francis and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

“I’ve spent my entire nursing career working with women and children. From the time I decided to be a nurse, that has been my love and my passion,” Edwards said.

For the past 20 years, she has been employed by the North Broward Hospital District, beginning in pediatrics. She was named director and later took over the women’s services. During her tenure at North Broward Hospital, Edwards expanded the women’s diagnostic and treatment services.

The Women’s Care Center, located on the fourth floor at Haywood Regional Medical Center, offers a family centered approach to childbirth. The total birth experience involves a full range of prenatal and childbirth classes, and six labor-delivery-recovery suites.

Care at the center is provided by a group of 23 licensed nurses, who have received specialized training in the care of women and newborn infants.
