Patient Claims Innovations Improved Joint Replacement Experience
By Marian Larson
Having had her right knee replaced more than two years ago, Ida McClain, 80, of Waynesville, recently was informed that her left knee also required replacement. She chose the Carolina Center for Joint Replacement (CCJR) at Haywood Regional Medical Center for her surgery and care.
Although she was a couple years older than when her initial surgery took place, this time, her recovery was much quicker and the process went much more smoothly. McClain attributes her success to the recent addition of medical advances and innovations at HRMC in their joint replacement center.
"I had the surgery on a Monday (June 11) and came home that Friday, and I walked in the door myself," she said.
For starters, McClain participated in the CCJR Joint Camp’s prehab program, working with physical therapists for more than two weeks prior to her surgery in order to strengthen her leg muscles through a variety of exercises.
Cindy Ladkani, McLain’s daughter and coach through the surgery and recovery process said informational sessions and an easy to follow guide book before surgery provided important information not only to patients, but to their caregivers as well.
"They brought people in to talk about having the house ready when I returned from surgery or how to access social services. They encouraged continuity of care at home. And I think that's one of the secrets to how well she's recovered," Ladkani said.
As part of her recovery while at HRMC, McClain also participated in group physical therapy, which allows patients having the same procedure to exercise together twice daily.
"That was good because we got to talk and compare notes. And it helped to motivate me," McClain said.
“Everyone at HRMC was so sweet and pleasant,” McClain said. “Dr. Catterson was a great support and he’s an excellent surgeon. I’ve already recommended CCJR to many of my friends. I couldn’t have had such a positive experience without the help and support of the HRMC staff.”
