HRMC Celebrates National Medical Laboratory Professional's Week April 22-28

"THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE RESULTS"

National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 22 – 28 is a time to honor the more than 280,000 medical laboratory professionals across the nation who perform and interpret laboratory tests that save lives and keep people healthy.

Although people who work in the laboratory are not as visible as the physicians or nursing staff at Haywood Regional Medical Center, Laboratory Professionals are the people behind the results. They are the unsung heroes in the detection and elimination of disease process.

Often they’re only known for their blood collection skills, but there is much more to what happens than mere blood collection. Once drawn blood must be tested and interpreted in any of various laboratory departments depending upon what the physician is requesting. Results of laboratory tests often identify the presence of disease in its earliest stages, when the possibilities of a cure are greatest and when treatment is least costly.

The different areas of the HRMC laboratory include - Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Cytology and Histology. The lab employs over 40 staff members including two board certified Pathologists.

“We are proud of our team and want the community to know who we are and what we do - quality laboratory work which aids in the treatment and diagnosis for every patient entering HRMC,” said Garry Wooten, Outreach Coordinator in the HRMC Laboratory.
