Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center Celebrates Medical Fitness Week - April 23-29

Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center, in conjunction with The Medical Fitness Association (MFA), is sponsoring the third annual "Medical Fitness Week," April 23-29, 2007.

According to Kathy Keogh, Health Promotion Coordinator, “During Medical Fitness Association Week, HRH&FC is promoting a Step Challenge among employees and fitness center members to help improve fitness goals.” The challenge, which involves wearing a pedometer to track how many steps a day are being achieved, encourages movement by asking people to strive to make 70,000 steps in seven days.

In general, the goal of the Medical Fitness Week initiative is to promote an increase in physical activity levels in all ages and to highlight the medical fitness difference. Currently, medical fitness facilities provide health and wellness programs to over two million people worldwide.

The medical fitness difference includes:

  • Physician and/or Medical Board oversight
  • Clinical programs and services for all ages
  • Health risk assessments
  • Prevention, health risk reduction and therapeutic lifestyle programming
  • Qualified credentialed staff with education and training appropriate to the program(s) offered and populations served.

Located next to Haywood Regional Medical Center, the HRH&FC spans two floors at 54,000 square feet. “Participating in activities at the fitness center can benefit people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of health, from children to seniors,” said Director, Scotty Setser. “As a Medical Fitness facility, we cater to everyone from athletes to people with arthritis to those undergoing cardiac rehabilitation after surgery.”

Facilities & Activities at the facility include:

  • 6-lane 25-yard indoor heated pool and warm water therapy pool
  • 3000 square feet of cardiovascular equipment with Cardio-theater
  • 1200 square feet of selectorized Body Master and Hammer
  • Strength training equipment
  • 3/4 size gymnasium & traverse climbing wall
  • 2 racquetball courts
  • Group fitness including step, cycling, and mind & body programming
  • Private training studio
  • Indoor track (1/10 mile)
  • Indoor stationery cycling room
  • Steam room and sauna in each locker room
  • Personal training
  • Diabetes education center
  • Health Education classes
  • Health Education classrooms
  • 1800 square foot multi-purpose room
  • Towel and locker service
  • Full service men’s and women’s locker rooms with towels & hair dryers
  • Nursery service
  • Child change area
  • Weight management & nutrition information

Over the past few years, accomplishments of the Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center include being selected as Club Industry Magazine’s "Best of the Best" for an indoor Aquatics facility, receiving the Medical Fitness Association's Distinguished Center Award; and an award from the Southeastern Hospital Fitness Association.

An affiliate of the American Hospital Association, the non-profit Medical Fitness Association (MFA), was founded in 1991 and is dedicated to medically based fitness and wellness facilities. MFA is a professional membership association whose mission is to ascertain and respond to the needs of centers that are owned, sponsored or operated by hospitals and physician groups throughout the world. The organization serves as a resource for hospitals and other healthcare related groups ready to enter the wellness and fitness center market.
