Haywood Sports Medicine Offers Free Sports Physicals for Student Athletes May 31

Haywood Sports Medicine will offer free-pre-participation comprehensive sports physicals for middle and high school student athletes starting at 5:45 p.m. on May 31 at the Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center.

Haywood Sports Medicine of Haywood Regional Medical Center is a collaborative sports medicine program between physicians, athletic trainers, rehabilitation, health and fitness staff as well as other medical professionals associated with the hospital. Dr. Christofer Catterson of Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists is the medical director.

These professionals donate their time to perform individual pre-participation examinations and to complete forms required by the state of North Carolina for student athletes. All Haywood County current sixth through eleventh grade students who plan to participate in a school sports activity for the upcoming school year are eligible to have a free pre-participation physical.

HRMC’s sports physical is modeled after Preparticipation Physical Evaluation as published in “the Physician and Sportsmedicine”. It is the model endorsed by the five major medical societies plus cardiac screening guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association. Specialists in several areas such as orthopaedic surgery, cardiology, OB/GYN, family practice, and internal medicine allow us to provide one of the most comprehensive examinations to ensure student athletes are properly evaluated to the highest standards set forth for sports participation.

The physical examination will include a review of each student’s medical history, height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, vision, general medical condition, and musculoskeletal and cardiovascular exams, as required by the North Carolina Board of Education. A physical exam is necessary each year for students to participate in athletics and parents will be referred to their physician of choice for follow-up care if needed.

Times for the physicals will be based on the school; Canton Middle School students begin at 5:45 pm, Bethel Middle School and Bethel Christian Academy begin at 6:30 p.m.; Waynesville Middle School begins at 7:15 p.m. and Haywood County high schools begins at 8 p.m.

Students should pick up an information packet in the office at their school beginning May 21, prior to their physical.

For more information about the physicals, call 452-8077
