MedWest Sports Medicine offering Haywood student athletes free pre-participation sports physicals May 29

Clyde, N.C. – MedWest Sports Medicine is offering Haywood County student athletes free pre-participation sports physicals Tuesday, May 29 at the MedWest Health & Fitness Center on the campus of MedWest-Haywood.

More than 60 volunteers and 30 physicians and health care specialists will offer free sports participation physicals for Haywood County middle and high public school students for the 2012-2013 school year. A team of physicians and physician assistants in the fields of primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, general surgery, ENT (or ear, nose and throat), women’s care, urology and orthopedic surgery are joining MedWest Sports Medicine for this special evening focused on the health of local student athletes.

The sports physicals will be held May 29 at the MedWest Health & Fitness Center on the campus of MedWest-Haywood at the following times:

•5:45 p.m. for Canton Middle School and Bethel Middle School students,
•6:30 p.m. for Pisgah High School students,
•7:15 p.m. for Waynesville Middle School, Bethel Christian Academy and Haywood Christian Academy, and
•8 p.m. for Tuscola High School students.

“Last year, our team at MedWest provided more than 500 students with free sports physicals,” said Christofer Catterson, MD, medical director of MedWest Sports Medicine. “Our community physicians, athletic trainers and physical therapists join me in taking great pride in caring for our student athletes as we enter the next sports season.”

Health information packets will be available in the front offices of each school two weeks prior to physicals. These packets need to be filled out by parents prior to the physicals. Parental attendance during the physicals also is requested in case there are health-related questions or findings by MedWest’s team of physicians and health care specialists.

There is no make-up date, but students who miss the May 29 session can receive physicals for fees that may vary with their family physicians or at one of MedWest's Urgent Care Centers at another time.

The MedWest Urgent Care Center in Canton recently opened with a space devoted to MedWest Sports Medicine and physical therapy, an expansion that is providing greater access to health care for athletes in eastern Haywood County.

Last month, Catterson also moved into the new MedWest Outpatient Care Center, a 42,000-square-foot medical office building at 581 Leroy George Dr. on the campus of MedWest-Haywood. The new location is providing patients with updated facilities and includes a new 10,000-square-foot orthopedic office, physical therapy, radiology services including an MRI and a state-of-the- art outpatient surgical center. This collection of services under one roof is allowing Catterson and MedWest Sports Medicine to better streamline orthopedic services and care in the community.
