MedWest Health System welcomes ophthalmologist Perry Younger, MD
to Mountain Eye Associates

Clyde, Canton and Waynesville, N.C. – MedWest Health System welcomes ophthalmologist Perry Younger, MD to Mountain Eye Associates, starting May 1.

Younger joins David D. Markoff, MD, Stephen W. Hartzell, MD, Kristel W. Causby, OD, and Robert H. Dickey, OD at Mountain Eye Associates, which has offices in Clyde, Canton and Waynesville. The practice specializes in comprehensive routine, medical, surgical and consultative eye care and has been serving patients of Haywood and surrounding counties since 1977.

Younger said he is excited about joining Mountain Eye Associates and sharing his 14 years of practice experience with the community. He said he and his wife, Sujata C. Marihal, MD, MBBS, decided some time ago to move to a smaller town in the South, and they are looking forward to making their home in Waynesville and enjoying its “more peaceful and calm atmosphere.”

“I really liked working in rural areas in Pennsylvania as the patients seemed so appreciative of the special care I could give them,” Younger said. “Practicing ophthalmology outside the major cities allows the physician to provide more comprehensive care than one could otherwise.”

Younger said he particularly eager to share his expertise in the treatment of wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy using a new and growing class of medicines called vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF, inhibitors. “I have been involved in this type of treatment since December of 2006 and have found it to be truly innovative in the treatment of a wide array of retinal blood vessel diseases,” he said.

Younger’s other areas of treatment expertise include cataract surgery and glaucoma management.

A native of Illinois, Younger is licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina, South Carolina and Pennsylvania and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Prior to joining Mountain Eye Associates, Younger was in private practice at the Western Pennsylvania Eye Institute in Indiana, Penn., and Genovese Ophthalmic Associates in Kittanning, Penn.

His other experience includes practice work at Eastside Eye Center in Spartanburg, S.C., and at Community Eye Care Specialists in Seneca, Penn. For more than four years, Younger also was an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh.

Younger earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Indiana University in 1990 and a medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1994. He completed a transitional internship at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1995. Three years later, Younger finished a combined program in ophthalmology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
