MedWest-Haywood offering prostate screenings Saturday, Sept. 22 as part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Clyde, N.C. – MedWest-Haywood is offering prostate screenings for $20 each from 8 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22 as part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Richard Steele, MD and Brooks Hooper, MD of Blue Mountain Urology will conduct the screenings. Men interested in getting one of these prostate screenings need to call registered nurse Kathy Keogh with MedWest Wellness at (828) 452-8089 to register and make an appointment.

Prostate screenings help with early detection of prostate cancer. Men who particularly should consider having a prostate screening include men who are at least 50 years old, men who are African-American, and men who have a brother, son or father who had prostate cancer before the age of 60.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancers and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2012, there will be 241,740 new prostate cancer cases diagnosed and 28,170 deaths from prostate cancer.

For more information about the prostate screenings Sept. 22, contact Keogh at (828) 452-8089 or Kathy.Keogh@haymed.org.
